Three Squadrons Partnering Together to Teach Weather

Understanding marine weather is essential for safe and confident boating. America's Boating Club | United States Power Squadrons has long been committed to providing high-quality boating education, and now, three squadrons are partnering together to teach a vital weather course. This collaborative effort ensures that boaters have access to expert-led training, no matter their location.

With challenges in securing individual instructors, squadrons within District 10 recognized the need for a new approach. By leveraging a district-wide roster of experienced educators, America's Boating Club | United States Power Squadrons has created an accessible, online boating weather education course designed to help boaters navigate unpredictable conditions.

Why Boating Weather Education Matters

Marine weather can change rapidly, and boaters must be prepared to make informed decisions on the water. From reading weather patterns to responding to sudden storms, weather training for boaters is a crucial skill set that enhances safety.

The boating safety weather course covers:

  • Understanding cloud formations and weather fronts
  • Interpreting marine forecasts and warnings
  • Recognizing wind patterns and their effects on navigation
  • Responding to sudden weather shifts on open water

Whether navigating coastal areas, inland lakes, or major waterways, boating weather forecast training provides boaters with the confidence to handle real-world conditions effectively.

Partnering Together to Teach – A Collaborative Effort

Recognizing the value of expertise from different locations, America's Boating Club | United States Power Squadrons formed a team of skilled instructors from various squadrons. These experienced boaters and weather enthusiasts brought unique perspectives to the course:

  • Wes Koplitz (Oshkosh, WI): Aircraft pilot and boater with expertise in weather formations from an aerial view.
  • Dale Perry (St. Paul, MN): Mississippi River boater sharing insights into riverine weather conditions.
  • Greg Korstad (Minnetonka, MN): Great Lakes boater explaining the dynamic changes in lake weather patterns.
  • Jennine Fine (Minnetonka) & Karen Manor (St. Paul): Course coordination and session recordings to ensure accessibility.

This team worked together virtually, never meeting in person, demonstrating how modern technology enhances marine weather training opportunities.

How the Virtual Course Works

The boating safety weather course is delivered online, making it accessible to members across Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota. Using GoToMeeting, students attend weekly winter sessions—an ideal time for learning as many boaters take a break from on-the-water activities.

Each session includes:

  • Instructor-led discussions with real-world weather experiences
  • Engaging presentations on marine weather conditions
  • Opportunities to ask questions and apply knowledge to practical scenarios

To ensure participation, students receive access to recorded sessions, allowing them to revisit lessons at their convenience. Exams are administered through local squadrons, reinforcing the collaborative effort that makes this course successful.

What Every Boater Should Know About Weather

Boaters often ask:

What is considered good boating weather?: Good boating weather generally includes clear skies, calm winds, and manageable wave heights. Boaters should always check weather forecasts before heading out and be aware of changing conditions.

How to check weather for boating?: Reliable sources include NOAA marine forecasts, local weather services, and VHF radio channels. Boaters should monitor updates regularly and understand key weather indicators such as barometric pressure changes and approaching storm fronts.

Through this course, participants gain the knowledge needed to interpret these forecasts accurately, ensuring safer voyages.
