Safety Equipment Required on Your Boat

Ensuring that your boat is equipped with the necessary safety gear is crucial for a safe and enjoyable voyage on the water. Boating can be a thrilling activity that comes with an array of risks. Having proper boat safety equipment on board not only complies with local regulations but enhances your safety and preparedness for emergencies. America’s Boating Club | United States Power Squadrons will guide you through the safety equipment required on your boat as well as a detailed checklist to ensure you stay compliant. Whether you’re a seasoned boater or a beginner, understanding the importance of having the correct equipment on board is crucial.

What Equipment is Required to Be on a Boat?

The required safety equipment varies depending on the type and size of the boat, categorized by federal regulations into four groups based on length (less than 16 feet, 16 to 26 feet, 26 to less than 40 feet, and 40 to less than 65 feet). Each group has specific requirements, such as personal flotation devices, throwable flotation devices, fire extinguishers, visual distress signals, and sound-producing devices. However, there are some common items that every boater should have on board:

  1. Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs): Every recreational boat must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person aboard, and all boats over 16 feet must also carry a throwable flotation device. Life jackets should be readily accessible and correctly sized for each individual, with additional safety features including a whistle and lights.
  2. Fire extinguishers: Boats that have an enclosed fuel or engine area are required to have a fire extinguisher on board the vessel.
  3. Visual distress signals: Visual distress signals are required on coastal waters, the Great Lakes, and waters connected to these bodies. USCG-approved devices include hand-held or aerial flares and smoke signals. These signals must be accessible and in good operating condition.
  4. Sound-producing devices: A horn, whistle, or bell is necessary for signaling others and can be used in emergency situations.
  5. Navigation lights: These lights are required to be turned on for all boats that operate during sunset and sunrise or during periods where the visibility is low.

What Additional Equipment Must Be on Board If Your Boat Is 16 Feet or Longer?

For boats that are 16 feet or longer, there are some additional requirements to enhance the safety on board:

  1. Throwable flotation device: As mentioned previously, boats that are over 16 feet require at least one throwable flotation device.
  2. Anchor and line: Having an anchor with enough line is crucial for securing your vessel safely in a variety of conditions.
  3. Bilge pump or bailer: This equipment is essential for removing water from the boat, particularly in emergency situations.
  4. VHF radio: While these are not mandatory, a VHF Radio is highly recommended for communication on a boat, especially if you’re traveling across large bodies on water.

Building Your Boat Safety Equipment Kit

Creating a comprehensive boat safety equipment kit involves gathering all the essential items and storing them in the designated places on board your vessel. Some items may need to be in a more accessible area on your vessel than others due to their need. A well-prepared kit is compiled of all items needed to comply with regulations as well as anything providing a peace of mind knowing you are ready if an emergency arises.
