How America’s Boating Club Squadrons Promote Boat Safety

At America’s Boating Club | United States Power Squadrons promoting boat safety is at the heart of what we do nationwide. Our network of squadrons across the U.S. is made up of dedicated members and volunteers who are passionate about helping boaters stay informed, prepared, confident, and safe out on the water.

From leading boater safety classes to offering FREE vessels safety checks, our squadrons are committed to playing a hands-on role in building a stronger and safer boating community. We will explore how America’s Boating Club squadrons promote boating safety all across the U.S.

Take a Boater Safety Course in Your Community

One of the most impactful ways that our squadrons promote boating safety is through boater safety courses for people of all levels. Whether you're new to boating or looking to expand your knowledge, there are an array of courses to help you stay confident and safe out on the water. Here are some of the courses that we offer:

Completing our basic boating safety course will often qualify you for a boat safety certificate, which is required in many states and may even reduce your boat insurance.

Promoting Safe Use of Boat Safety Equipment

America’s Boating Club local squadrons also frequently host public events  for boaters to learn how to properly use and maintain their boat safety . These safety precautions can include:

  •     Fitting and wearing life jackets properly
  •     Operating a fire extinguisher
  •     Storing and using flares correctly
  •     Creating a boating safety kit

We truly do encourage every boat to regularly inspect their equipment and make sure they meet current U.S. Coast Guard standards. Boating safety gear can make a huge difference in the event of an emergency.

Free Vessel Safety Checks (VSCs)

Most of our squadrons offer FREE vessel safety checks at local marinas, boat ramps, and during boating safety events. These inspections are designed to help you stay compliant and safe out on the water.

A typical VSC will check for the following:

  •     Valid registration
  •     Navigation lights
  •     Life jackets
  •     Fire extinguisher
  •     Sound producing device
  •     And more…

Boaters who pass the check  receive a decal, while those who don’t will get a helpful checklist on corrections needed to pass the safety check.  Typical corrections typically  involves either missing or expired boat safety equipment, and improper registration.

Building Community Partnerships

Our squadrons work closely with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, harbormasters, and allied marine safety organizations. These partnerships allow squadrons to:

  •     Host boating safety workshops at community events and local marinas
  •     Support youth boating and sailing programs in their areas
  •     Participate in safe boating campaigns and boat shows

Collaborating with these local agencies makes it easier to reach new boaters and deliver boating safety education in a fun yet accessible way.

Mentoring New Boaters On and Off the Water

The learning doesn’t stop outside of the classroom. Many squadrons have hands-on training where experienced members help newcomers learn:

  •     Docking with more confidence
  •     Using navigation tools
  •     Practicing emergency drills
  •     Understanding how to use boating safety kits

These informal real world experiences are helpful for new boat owners, families, and seasonal boaters who want practical guidance outside of the classroom.
