Ready, Set, Wear It! Gearing Up for National Safe Boating Week

As the weather begins to warm up and the lure of boating becomes impossible to ignore, boaters across the US are prepping their vessels for another season of great adventure out on the water. An important date to mark on your nautical calendar this season is National Safe Boating Week. At America’s Boating Club | United States Power Squadrons, May isn’t just about the arrival of the boating season, but also it's looking forward to National Safe Boating Week which takes place May 17th to 23rd. This week is compiled with a variety of events helping every captain or boater out there stay prepared for the unexpected.

The Mission Behind the Movement

Occurring annually during the week leading up to Memorial Day weekend, National Safe Boating Week is more than just a date on the calendar; it is organized to promote responsible boating practices across the US. Led by the Safe Boating Campaign, this initiative highlights the critical importance of boating education and consistent life jacket usage. At America’s Boating Club | United States Power Squadrons, we believe that an educated boater is a confident boater. By focusing on simple habits we can drastically reduce the number of boating accidents on the waterways.

"Wear It" – A Simple Message with Life-Saving Impact

One of the most important aspects of the campaign is the powerful “Wear It” message. Year after year, the U.S. Coast Guard statistics tell a sobering story that the vast majority of boat-related fatalities involve individuals who were not wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident. Many boaters believe that having a life jacket stowed in a locker is “enough”, but in an emergency, there is rarely time to find and put on a vest. Today’s life jackets have evolved far beyond the bulky, uncomfortable orange collars. Modern, inflatable life jackets are slim, lightweight, and designed for maximum mobility, making it easier than ever to prioritize safety out on the water.

Show Your Support: Wear Your Life Jacket at Work Day!

One of the most engaging events of the week is “Wear Your Life Jacket at Work Day” on Friday, May 16th, 2026. This event is an excellent opportunity for members and the general public to demonstrate their commitment to safety out on the water in a fun and visible way. Whether you are heading to the office, working from home, or out in the field, we encourage all to wear their PFD (personal flotation device) all day long. Snap a photo and share it on social media using this hashtag #WearYourLifeJacketToWorkDay. It’s a great way to spark serious conversations with coworkers and friends about the importance of being prepared before you leave the dock and out on the boat.

Why Your Preparation Starts in April

While the official week doesn’t begin until May, the foundation for a safe season starts now. This is the ideal time to take advantage of the resources offered by America’s Boating Club | United States Power Squadrons. We encourage all boaters to schedule a free vessel safety check with their local squadron as well as inquire about our array of boating safety courses and seminars. This is the time you should enroll in our specialized seminars or take an advanced course to sharpen your skills.
