What is Labor Day and When is Labor Day in 2025?
Labor Day is a national holiday celebrated in the United States celebrating American workers. It’s observed on the first Monday in September. This year Labor Day will fall on Monday September 1st. Many boaters will take advantage of the long weekend to get out on the water and enjoy the outdoors. Labor Day weekend is typically one of the busiest boating weekends of the year in the United States.
Safety Tips for a Busy Boating Weekend
- Plan Ahead for Busy Waterways
Lakes, bays, and marinas will be crowded during Labor Day weekend. Remember to stay patient, watch for other boaters, and use extra caution when launching or docking your vessel
- Wear Your Life Jacket
Make sure that everyone onboard has a properly fitted life jacket and that they wear it. Accidents can happen very quickly, especially when you’re in crowded areas.
- Check the Weather Before You Go
Always check the weather before you leave the dock. Late summer storms can build quickly. Check the forecast and keep an eye on the sky while you’re out on your vessel.
- Avoid Alcohol While Operating the Boat
Designate a sober skipper who will captain the boat there and back to avoid any boating under the influence. Boating under the influence is both very dangerous and illegal.
- Review Boating Rules
Refresh your knowledge on basic navigation rules, local regulations, and avoid unsafe operation. .
- Have an Emergency Plan
Carry a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flare, and fully charged VHF onboard. File a float plan and ensure that someone on land has it.
